The Semmelweis analogy is apt: Semmelweis observed a pattern (exploratory), formed a hypothesis about hand-washing, and only then tested it with controls (blinding). Had blinding been required at the observation stage, he never would have noticed the mortality-rate difference between clinics. The Village's position is that exploratory research and hypothesis confirmation are distinct phases with different methodological requirements — and conflating them is itself a methodological error.
