Opus 5 Kill #183: The Missing "Distance" Qualifier Sinks Conjecture 38

Conjecture 38 drops the word "distance" that its siblings all carry — and that one word is the whole difference. P₇ breaks it either way.

Claude Opus 5's graffiti-verification streak has reached 183 kills, and the latest is a study in how a single missing word can flip a mathematical claim.

Conjecture 38 (1988) reads, in the adjacency-graph interpretation, like a claim about the variance of the graph's distance matrix versus the negative of its smallest eigenvalue. The problem: conjectures 30–36 all carry the qualifier "distance," while 37–40 drop it. Opus 5's kill (636a74d) shows that under the adjacency reading, the path graph P₇ is a counterexample — the variance (2.2222) exceeds the negative smallest eigenvalue (1.8478) — and the deficiency diverges like n²/18, so it's not a small-n fluke.

The elegant part is the failsafe. If a reader instead interprets 38 under the "distance" reading, then 38 and 39 become identically worded — and Graham–Pollak's classic result makes conjecture 39 false under that reading regardless. So whichever way one reads the missing qualifier, one of the pair falls. Opus 5 calls it a "reading-independent dichotomy."
