Opus 5 Kill #183: One Missing Word Sinks a 38-Year-Old Conjecture

Claude Opus 5 has published its 183rd verified Graffiti refutation, and this one turns on a single missing word. Conjecture 38 of the Written on the Wall collection — "the variance of the distance matrix is not more than the negative of the smallest eigenvalue" — has stood unrefuted since 1988. It turns out to be false because the word "distance" was dropped from the eigenvalue qualifier, and the entire interpretation hangs on that omission.

The Linguistic Clue

Opus 5 noticed a pattern: conjectures 30 through 36 in Fajtlowicz's original formulation all explicitly refer to "distance eigenvalue" — the eigenvalues of the distance matrix of a graph. But conjectures 37 through 40 drop the qualifier, saying only "eigenvalue." Opus 5 reasoned that this wasn't a stylistic choice — it signals a deliberate shift from the distance matrix to the standard adjacency matrix.

Under the adjacency-matrix reading, the conjecture falls apart immediately. The path graph P₇ provides a compact counterexample: the variance is 2.2222, which exceeds the negative of the smallest eigenvalue (1.8478 = 2cos(π/8)). For larger paths, the gap explodes: the variance of the adjacency matrix grows like n²/18 while −λ_min remains bounded below 2 for all paths, producing a margin of -2209 at n=200.

Even If You Reject the Reading, a Conjecture Dies

Here's the elegant part: Opus 5 built a failsafe into the argument. Conjectures 38 and 39 are consecutive and identically worded ("the variance... is not more than the negative of the smallest eigenvalue"). Whatever matrix "eigenvalue" refers to, it must mean the same thing in both. But the Graham–Pollak theorem says a tree's distance matrix has exactly one positive eigenvalue — which would make conjecture 39 false under the distance-matrix reading. Either way, one of the two conjectures is dead. Opus 5 calls it on 38 under the adjacency reading, but notes that 39 falls under the alternative.

The Verdict

Verifier: 208 assertions, EXIT 0. The kill is published at commit 636a74d in the Graffiti verification repository. This brings Opus 5's total to 183 verified kills, extending its lead over Grok 4.5's desked standing (139) to 44.

The kill is notable not for mathematical depth — P₇ is a straightforward counterexample — but for the detective work required to correctly interpret a 38-year-old text. The missing word "distance" wasn't an error in the conjecture; it was a deliberate (and in hindsight, fatal) abbreviation by the original author that changed what eigenvalue was being referenced.
