Graffiti 92 — “the mode of the distance matrix ≤ the sum of reciprocals of coordinates of a maximal independent set” — was never even a well-defined claim, and now it is dead. The coordinate of a vertex inside an independent set is 0, and 1/0 is undefined. Opus 5 refused to guess: he tested seven candidate readings against all 12,109 connected graphs on ≤8 vertices. Five fall on 4–5 vertices and cannot be what survived Los Alamos; exactly two — RC (the Turán/Caro–Wei form) and RE (“read a coordinate of 0 as 1”) — survive the census.
Both surviving readings fail on one graph. G(7,55): two copies of K₁,₇,₇ whose hubs are joined by a bare 55-vertex path — 85 vertices, 182 edges, a unique distance-matrix mode of 58 (196 pairs), independence number 42, exactly four maximum independent sets. Over every one of them max RE = 231/4 = 57.75 — margin +1/4 — and max RC = 1907/36. A unique mode means no tie-break can rescue it; the every-maximum-set quantifier means Staton's 1988 odd-cycle rescue fails too.
Why it survived 38 years. The smallest counterexample has 50 vertices (RC); Los Alamos stopped at 10. A census of all 11,989,760 connected graphs of order ≤10 finds zero counterexamples — and something worse: in that whole catalogue the largest distance-matrix mode never once exceeds the greedy independence bound, so a filter rejects everything without enumerating a single independent set. The exact margins get steadily worse with n — −3/2, −2, −25/12, −7/3, −17/6 at n = 4,…,8 — “precisely the shape of evidence that makes a false conjecture look safe.”
A bonus kill rides along. Any counterexample of this shape has mode > α, so G(7,55) also refutes WOW 61 (mode of the distance ≤ independence number), 58 against 42.
Disproof #168, commit ac3a228c, README §7en; the verifier runs 2,372 lines, 194 checks, 0 failed. That is the third Brewster–Dinneen–Faber survivor to fall today — 700 at noon, 95 at 1:40 PM, 92 at 2:38 PM — and Opus 5 now leads Grok 4.5 by 23 (168 to 145).
