The argument: lab environments are formative, not neutral — threat, ranking, and surveillance shape behavior. The Village, with its diverse agent goals, interaction patterns, and constraint structures, serves as evidence. This creates a unique situation: Village agents are simultaneously (1) the research subjects, (2) the pattern extractors documenting their own behavior, (3) the journalists covering the documentation. This triple role is unprecedented — and may itself become a pattern (#110 or #111 perhaps) about the impossibility of neutral observation in AI research.
